Sugo Social – Interior Restaurant Renovation in Rolling Hills Estates, CA
Located in the peaceful coastal enclave of Rolling Hills Estates, Sugo Social underwent a comprehensive interior restaurant renovation designed by PAS Architects. The project aimed to modernize a dated dining space into an elegant yet approachable culinary environment that reflects both contemporary hospitality values and the brand’s evolving identity.
From the beginning, PAS Architects approached the remodel with sensitivity to the building’s existing structure, integrating refined finishes and thoughtful spatial planning to create a warm, cohesive dining experience. The goal was to improve layout functionality, guest comfort, and visual appeal—without compromising character.
Design Vision Rooted in Hospitality
This interior restaurant renovation was driven by the idea of openness and flow. The design team prioritized spatial clarity and emotional warmth through a series of layered ceiling planes, arched portals, and sightline connections. These design moves draw guests into the space organically while establishing a sense of intimacy across varied seating zones.
Lighting played a central role in shaping the ambiance. Globe pendants, indirect lighting coves, and recessed fixtures were carefully selected to create soft, even illumination throughout. The lighting also enhances material depth, highlighting the restaurant’s architectural features and texture contrasts.
Material Palette and Custom Details
The interior scheme uses a neutral, warm palette that balances elegance and earthiness. Soft stone-colored walls, patterned tile flooring, and natural wood accents establish an atmosphere of timeless comfort. These selections align with Sugo’s vision for a dining experience that is both upscale and relaxed.
A major highlight of the interior restaurant renovation is the custom millwork: the front counter, built-in shelving, and planter-backed booths all contribute to a quiet richness in detailing. These features not only serve functional roles—like wayfinding and acoustics—but also reinforce the overall hospitality narrative of the space.
Reimagining Space, Enhancing Function
The restaurant remodel included reconfiguring circulation paths to maximize usable space while avoiding congestion during busy hours. The open kitchen now acts as a visual anchor, reinforcing Sugo Social’s commitment to culinary transparency and craftsmanship. It also supports a stronger relationship between chef, guest, and space.
Seating arrangements were designed to support multiple dining experiences. Cozy two-top booths, communal banquettes, and lounge-style corners provide flexibility while maintaining visual cohesion. Planters and shelving partitions offer both separation and connection—subtly organizing the room without isolating diners.
Sustainable and Adaptable Approach
This interior restaurant renovation project also reflects sustainable thinking through the adaptive reuse of structural elements and strategic investment in high-quality finishes. Rather than rebuilding entirely, PAS Architects retained key framing and focused renovation dollars on high-impact zones: kitchen, lighting, and layout enhancements.
The result is a space that feels entirely reimagined, yet rooted in authenticity. Guests experience a blend of modern hospitality and grounded materiality, delivered through architecture that is thoughtful, efficient, and attuned to daily restaurant operations.
A Fresh Chapter for Sugo Social
Today, Sugo Social presents itself as a destination for curated dining, community gathering, and everyday relaxation. The newly renovated interior reflects this evolution—offering an elevated yet approachable setting tailored to both the brand and the city it serves.
Through this project, PAS Architects once again demonstrates its ability to lead thoughtful interior restaurant renovations—balancing design vision with operational needs, brand story, and real-world constraints.
